This was one of the first CDs with the "B-Box" metal-packaging,
which is environmentally better than plastic cases - without costing
much more then these. The metal-packing was only be used for the
initial runs in Japan and Europe because of the limited manufacturing
capabilities - and currently there are only about 50 CDs left with
this packaging. (at the end of 1998)
But a CD is more then packaging - first is the music, which is funky,
tough and original. Holzman's influences are clearly recognisable -
Miles Davis (he worked for Miles Davis longer than any other
keyboarder), Chaka Khan, many funk-groups, The Doors - and the
cyberpunk-movement - but they are combined in an individual
style.
When the album was released in October 1995, the style was still
unnamed - now it is recognisable as a forerunner of some
drum&bass remixers and musicians.
After 2 critically acclaimed albums with a superstar lineup, Adam
Holzman decided to work with a group of great , experienced musicians
without big names (yet):
- Aaron Heick - who toured worldwide with Chaka Khan -
Saxophone
- Mitch Stein - ex David Sanborn Band, Tania Maria & Chaka
Khan - guitars
- Freddy Cash - ex Arrested Development , Chaka Khan Band -
bass
- JuJu House - ex Arrested Development, and drummer of the
legendary recording "Slave To The Rhythm" by Grace Jones - drums
and vocals
The music is pure, dark cyber-jazz - more focussed than
"Overdrive", but with the same strong melodies and dark humor.
The reactions of the press were excellent - most funk-oriented
reviewers loved the album - and we have already received hundreds of
feedback cards congratulating us to this album. The only people
disliking the album were some very conventional retailers who either
critized the album as not being traditional jazz - or for its
packaging, which they disliked because it is not the typical plastic
case they seem to love.
