Currently a lot of people in the USA and some other countries seem to have forgotten all about a recent lesson from history:
The legitimate rights of a non-smoking person not to be bothered by smoke have been blown out of proportion - hurting the rights of more then 40 % of the population in the USA and many other countries.
Protection of rights is - for those who have studied the process of democracy - not a one-way street that favors those loud enough to voice their opinion effectively. And limiting the freedom of choice of a huge part of the population while acting in the financial interests of the state finances (potentially saving cleaning costs and medical costs) and at the same time pretending to act in the interest of the health of the population is strictly ridiculous.
US-laws are getting more and more ridiculous - but we can't do much about this (except by not voting for anyone who has an anti-smoking policy). The one thing Alex Merck and some other businessmen from Europe can do is already happening :
Regarding the private anti-smoking initiatives by some airlines, hotels etc - we can do more:
This brings us to the tips for travelling smokers:
European transportation:
There are still a few flights in Europe - mainly coming and going to Italy and Greece from other european countries. Ask specifically for smoking flights.
Please do not take non-smoking seats if you are a smoker. We have seen this happening a few times - and it gives the computer systems of airlines the wrong idea - that there are more non-smokers than there actually are.
If you travel within Germany, BeNeLux or France, it might make
sense taking a train instead of a airplane. In Europe there are many
fast trains with the most common names being EC (Euro-City),
IC, ICE, Thalys (Germany - Belgium - France), Eurostar (France - UK),
TGV (France, France- Switzerland). They are cheaper then flights -
and in many cases as fast or faster then the flights if you include
the transportation between the airports and the centre of the city,
where the trainstations are.
In contrast with US-train rules, all European trains have about 25 %
to 35 % of all seats assmoking sections, which corresponds roughly
with the percentage of smokers in northern Europe.
Transatlantic flights:
Currently very few airlines still offer smoking transatlantic flights - Swissair, Lufthansa and the US-airlines have stopped already.
Currently a charter airline called "Condor" (based in Germany and a subsidiary of Lufthansa) does still offer transatlantic flights with smoking seats. From Holland there is also "Martinair", which offers some smoking seats on their transatlantic flights.
Transpacific flights:
Europe - Asia: most asian airlines still have smoking flights on the long routes. Lufthansa is already boycotted by many smokers because they do not offer smoking flights on the main routes to Asia anymore. Singapore Airlines is another one of those problems.
