Since their first album "Cool Shoes" (also on Lipstick) , ethno-funk-jazz group Vibe Tribe has gone through some changes. Of course founding members Kai Eckhard de Camargo (bass) and Munjungo Jackson (percussion) are still with the group, but the ethnic influences have been broadend.
Bandleader and guitarist Richard Schumacher has been involved with a lot of east-african music - and got to know the ethiopean singer Blaine Paulus (normally just called "Blaine" as a pop-singer), who has among other jobs worked for Ray Gaskins (where she was the substitute for soul-diva Jocelyn Brown of "Incognito"-fame).
She can be heard as guest singer on the jazzy arrangement of ethiopean folk song "NuNu" and the song "Secrets", which combines the folk roots with jazz in a way similar to Joni Mitchel.
Keyboardist Mitchel Forman (who had already spiced up Bill Evans hip-hop jazz in the mid-90s) joined the group and taking over on keyboards from Patrice Rushen, who became too busy with her work as producer for Janet Jackson and others.
On drums, Rayford Griffin now plays the tougher funky grooves, while Terry Lyne Carrington still plays the more subtle jazzy songs.
The album was co-producer by Reinhard Karwattky, who discovered Aziza Mustapha-Zadeh, and produced many album by brazilian and european jazz stars.
