Drummer Idris Muhammad was one of the main influences on the
acid-jazz scene of the 90s - his drum grooves were probably the most
sampled and copied rhythms for the style, since they perfectly fit
the dancefloor needs for funky broken rhythms.
My Turn is so far the only real solo album of Idris Muhammad. There was only one other album with his name as the leader, but that album was actually only a compilation of recordings by other artists with Idris playing drums on those tracks.
Such tracks are countless, since Idris Muhammad was (next to Billy Cobham Jr.) the most active drummer in the 70s and 80 soul and pop-jazz scene - workind for the CTI-label and supplying the legendary grooves for Bob James, Grover Washington Jr. and countless others.
In the beginning of 1991, Idris Muhammad and german keyboarder/producer Joachim Becker met - and Idris announced that he would finally like to make his own solo album after many years as a drummer for other stars. They lined up a group of Idris friends, who were all famous and had employed Idris on their own albums - Bob James, Grover Washington Jr., Hiram Bullock as well as singer Sakinah Muhammad.
The music is groovy, funky and entertaining - combining all facets of the pop-jazz of the 70s with more raunchy funk-jazz and straight high-class pop.
